RC Insider to share content with RC Evil Empire!

Good Evening Everyone,

I have some really good news to share with my loyal blog readers. I was just waiting for some confirmation so I could post it. Earlier this week I contacted http://www.rcevilempire.com/ about using some of their content for my new website coming out within the next week. I already have the place holder set, hosting was finalized today, and the Word Press template goes in at the beginning of next week.

On Tuesday, I contacted Aaron Biner of the RC Evil Empire website to find out if it would be possible for us to share news articles, video clips, and soundbites. He responded to me the next day and mentioned that he would be delighted to help me. I was excited. I actually hope to get up to San Fran and visit with Aaron soon. Quite possibly I might head up there for the 1/10th On-Road ROAR Electric Nationals at Nor-Cal Hobbies. I believe Nor-Cal Hobbies is Aaron's local home track if I am correct. That place looks like Disneyland for RC vehicles!

The aerials of that place are amazing! Many of you don't know this but back when Aaron and I were in high school we grew up racing at the same track in the Bay Area. Livermore to be exact. At the time Hobby Haven Raceway was one of the most popular indoor race tracks in Northern California next to Sacramento Mini-Wheels. Aaron was at the time the local fast stock and mod 2wd and 4wd club driver. There was a pretty fast group of guys I raced with back then... Jason Moberley, James Arluck, Greg and Eric Dennett not to mention Ryan Stiles who I haven't talked to in years... Even On-Road Gas Legend Mike Swauger graced us with his presence from time to time.

I personally want to thank Aaron for allowing me to use some of his content from his website and he is always more than welcome to use anything I have. I look forward to a long and prosperous working relationship with RC Evil Empire. I feel this will benefit both websites because I am based in Southern California. San Diego to be exact and Aaron is in Northern California so we can really cover a lot of races throughout the state.

Tomorrow I am going to media day at Cal Raceway in Orange, CA to visit with Charlie Barnes and some employees of local RC manufacturers, and then I'll be making my way to meet up with RC Insider's Zack Roger's at Pegasus Hobbies later in the day for Rnd 5 of the JBRL Electric Series. I told Zack I promise not to bug him too much this weekend just a little! LOL!

This is my second to last blog at this web address. I have a final one that I hope to get out the 4th of July and then the next time you will hear from me will be on my new site http://www.rcinsider.com/. In my final blog I plan to cover my wonderful meeting with Danny S. over at West Coast along with wrapping up the wonderful time I have had blogging about local RC racing in Southern California.

Stay tuned for my next blog...

News and Notes 6/21/10

All in all this was a great weekend for racing. Our local track here in San Diego 1/8 Wonder Barona Speedway isn't racing for the next two weekends. So it gives the locals here a chance to go up and run the LA tracks. This past week from Wednesday to Sunday 3 different groups of San Diego RC Clubs made the pilgrimage to West Coast RC Raceway! Wednesday a group from socal-rc.com were on hand for some racing, Friday El Cajon Hobbies raced which I was in attendance for. Finally on Sunday 1/8 Wonder Track Owner himself Ed Garcia and Jim Cooper my travel race dogs cruised up north for some RC action... Ed told me in one of the two conversations we had on Sunday, he will be joining me for the Shootout at Hot Rod Hobbies this July! Oh man our wives are going to be on fire with us! I am going to have fun explaining I need to be at Jimmy's track for four days! LOL!

Way to go all you guys for supporting West Coast this past week... Your all truly die hards in my book... In speaking with Ed the second time on his way home from West Coast he mentioned he will be heading up to Barona to work on the track this week possibly Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll let you know when and put it on the thread at socal-rc.com if anyone is interested in helping fix the track. This last Friday the socal-rc.com guys threw a fun run and raised $160 for 1/8 Wonder Barona Raceway at Franks backyard track in Chula Vista, CA... Guys way to go on this... This is awesome, this is the(RC Community I signed up to be a part of here in San Diego!!!!!!)

Also another note a lot of the guys who run out at 1/8 Wonder Barona Raceway were at the San Diego County Fair yesterday doing a demonstration of the different types of RC cars and trucks you can get into. Thanks guys for all your hard work on this, I saw some of the pics on socal-rc.com this afternoon. It's guys like you who really bring the growth to this awesome hobby!

Finally the best news to give at the end of this blog... My guy Zack Rogers had in my book another incredible weekend at his hometown track. The JBRL Electric Series Round 4 was in Bakersfield, CA this weekend at Racers Haven RC Raceway. Earlier tonight Zack called in his results to me... He TQ'ed and won both SS truck and 4wd SS buggy. He qualified 2nd in 2wd SS buggy and finished 3rd. He podiumed in all classes... I am so proud of the him... I know he was bummed about the 2wd finish I could tell by his voice on the phone, but man that is pretty good to pull all that off having no chassis sponsor! Many of you may not know the JBRL Electric racing series is becoming more and more competitive year after year. Every year there is new fresh fast local talent all battling for the top spot. Zack is doing all this mostly by motor and tire support. Zack's rides this weekend were powered by Banzai Motors, LRP SPX ESC's, JConcepts tires, Sparks Inks, Blackbeard RC etc... I once again congratulate him on a fantastic weekend.

I have some sweet news for him this week when we talk on either Monday or Tuesday! I am going to hold off and tell him before I blog about it. I want to make sure he is on board with my idea... Since Zack is now 18 by the way. His birthday was this past Saturday... I have some serious layout decisions for the site and I have the final look that I'll be deciding this week. I am going to show Zack first after my wife Mariela what I am purposing as far as layout is concerned. I need Zack's opinion because he is really knowledgeable of what is cool and hip when it comes to the RC sites. He going to help me promote (rcinsider.com) and he needs to be comfortable with the look and the content... I am taking the time to do this right and this year is the learning curve for getting the site up and working out all the bugs...

I have good idea's of where I want to take this site and where I hope it will be in a couple of years. At that point I hope Zack and I will be out looking for the next Zack Rogers who is on the cusp of factory support...

In my next blog I will focus on my conversation with Danny S of West Coast RC Raceway and Hobby Garage from last Friday...

Stay tuned for my next blog....

JBRL Electric Series Round 4 invades Bakersfield...

Zack Rogers (center)This weekend has been a blast for the RC Insider... Where do I begin? I first want to thank my supporting and loving wife for being so gracious in understanding how geeked up I am about getting this website up and running (rcinsider.com). Secondly I really want to thank El Cajon Hobbies for their support these past couple of weeks... Victor the owner of El Cajon Hobbies had gone out of his way to get a couple of shirts for me to bring down to Bakersfield this weekend...

I also want to thank Team ECH for helping me cut and set up my new short course body yesterday! Kyle and Eric are always going out of there way to help me. Guys we forgot to take a picture of the (team) at West Coast yesterday! Let's try not to let this happen again! LOL! This really has been a cool weekend for me. I think the biggest highlight was sitting up with Danny S., Chris Kaspar, and one of Danny's local drivers at his race track till 4:30 in the morning talking RC! It was without a doubt the most positive meeting, I have had on that kind of level. We didn't spend the night talking trash we spent the night talking and thinking of ways on bringing growth to RC. Danny and I think alike on some things some other things I am sure we might disagree on, but one thing is for sure we both want to see new people getting into this hobby and just have a good time.

I will blog more about my talk with Danny in a day or so. I want to turn my attention now to Round 4 of the JBRL Electric Series heading to Bakersfield on Father's Day! What a day for a race! In my house trust me it's Mother's Day! LOL! I was at the track yesterday. It looked pretty good. Jimmy will have fun announcing the race today. It also looks like there will be a bigger crowd then last year... I stopped by Brent Bizbee's No Tell Motel had a couple of red cups and visited with the JBRL die hards "It was good times had by all" Finally as you can see by the new picture of (Mr. Hometown Stud )Zack Rogers of Bakersfield he was sporting the new RC Insider gear on Saturday afternoon... I also took some footage of Zack practicing yesterday. I just want to say how happy I am with choosing Zack to help me with this little start-up weblog...

I had such a great time working and talking with him yesterday. Honestly it was the first time we could sit down and talk for over an hour without playing phone tag... Zack and I are on the same page, this is going to be good for the two of us... I wish him all the best today I know he will TQ one of the three classes he is racing! Round 4 will take place at Racers Haven in Bakersfield, CA. Practice 6:00am to 8:00am Racing begins at 9:00am...

RC Insider to use JBRL Photographers Photos!

Another good announcement to make the RC Insider's blog this evening is I have reached and agreement with Chris Kaspar of RNC Photography. They are the JBRL photographers that currently take pictures from each round of the JBRL this year. I have had a couple of very good phone calls with Chris in the past couple of weeks and I appreciate him letting me use these photo's. My requirement to use them is that I not only plug their photography website on my new site but also plug West Coast's up coming races! Not a problem for me Danny likes this blog and I am sure he will like the new word press layout I am going to drop in a couple of weeks.

I originally intended on asking these guys if I could use these photo's for my site but since I haven't put it up yet I didn't ask. As you know I do plug charity events and memorial races on this blog that is how Chris and I got in touch with each other recently. So after discussing the charity photo's we put a plan together for the JBRL Races and West Coast Races that I am allowed to use the photo's to promote those events as well as use the photos to jazz the site up if need be! As I explained to Chris it isn't easy creating content but I am getting it done slowly but surely...

I along with Team El Cajon Hobbies will be in attendance this Friday June 18th at West Coast RC Raceway and Hobby Garage. Hopefully I can touch base with Danny, give him a RC Insider Shirt and discuss a couple of idea's I have for the KO PROPO races that he is running at his track this year...

Summer racing is in full swing and you better believe there are plenty of races to catch and the RC Insider plans to be at most of them... Provided the wife has no other plans for me! LOL!

RC Insider signs Zachary Rogers

As many of you know I am in the process of moving the RC Insider Blog to a full blown site. I am taking the Word Press route and going to be choosing a template that is a good platform for both video and photography. Having said that I have been in the process of choosing a company rep/driver that can represent the RC Insider to its best ability. The RC Insider was initially created to promote local tracks and drivers in the Southern California Area. It is my goal that someday it can be viewed as the Red RC of the United States! I have a vision of where I can take this and I hope to be able to make it happen. In doing this I have chosen to bring aboard Zachary Rogers as a company rep/driver.

Zack is 17 years old and based out of Bakersfield, CA. He has been racing for the past 4.5 years. His home track is Racer's Haven. He often races at Hot Rod Hobbies, OCRC, and West Coast Hobby Garage and Raceway. His sponsors include JConcepts, Banzai Motors, Sparks Inks, Blackbeard RC, and now RC Insider.

Here are some of his accomplishment's of 2010:
3rd Place in Pro Mod Buggy and Truck in the Golden State Electric Challenge.
1st Place in 4wd Mod and Super Stock Buggy in the SuperCross Series at West Coast RC.
1st place ROAR Region 12 in Super Stock Buggy, and TQ and 2nd Place in Super Stock 4wd.
TQ and 1st place in Super Stock 4wd, 2nd in Super Stock Buggy and Mod Truck at the JConcepts Wave Race. In JBRL Standings this year, Zack sits in 1st place in Super Stock Truck, 2nd in Super Stock Buggy, and 3rd in 4wd Super Stock. He is currently the only one sitting in a podium position at this point of the Series without a Chassis sponsor in the Super Stock Classes! Awesome job Zack!

Zack has been a big supporter of this blog since it's inception. Zack was really the first local fast driver here in So Cal that came to me and said he really liked what I have been doing. At that point I felt I was on to something really cool. Zack quickly hit my radar towards the end of last year. At the beginning of this year I PM'ed Zack to let him know that I was tracking his results and going to be blogging about him. He was stoked at the time. I spent the first part of the year putting my plan together for this site, while doing that I watched Zack at the first couple of JBRL races, spent time talking to him on the phone, and finally e-mailing and finding out what kind of a kid he is. I am glad he planning on attending college in the fall. Zack mentioned he wants to go to Golden West College near OCRC. I really liked hearing that. Zack is the perfect driver for the RC Insider. He is running all Super Stock classes on the JBRL this year without any Chassis support! I explained to Zack the RC Insider is about promoting RC racing and taking the privateer driver to the next level. My goal is to help give him the exposure he needs so he can at some point get to Team Associated, Losi, etc.

I spoke with Zack a couple of weeks ago and originally offered support for the Hot Rod Hobbies Shootout in Saugus, CA this year. I told him what I could offer, he was thrilled. He even offered to wear my gear at Nationals and putting me down as a sponsor without even me mentioning anything about Nationals. Needless to say, I promised him I would help him at Nationals this year as well. Zack understands I can't give him the Factory support of some the manufacturers but I can help in other ways. He is understanding of that and that helps me... I have told him he is welcome to rep the website for as long as he wants.

He has an open door with me. I told him I want to build the driver part of the site around him and his driving results. In the future, I hope to bring on more drivers with Zack Rogers credentials down the road. Last week, I sent him the proofs of the new logo I am going to be rolling out very soon. I asked for his input. I also sent the proofs to Eric as well from EL Cajon Hobbies! El Cajon Hobbies will also be on the shirts as well. I made some tweaks and it is at the printers as we speak. I haven't mentioned this to Zack yet, but I am setting him up with an e-mail account as well as some business cards to take to his traveling races. I believe in this kid and hopefully I can help him get to where he wants to be in the world of RC!

Stay tuned for my next blog!

Jones Cancer Foundation to Sponsor Tyler Vik...

Tyler Vik (Right)Good Evening,

On May 26, 2010 Keith Jones of the Jones Cancer Foundation and Rocketship Racing here in San Diego, CA sent me a return text regarding his plans for the 4th Round of the JBRL Nitro Series. On July 10th at Green Flag Raceway in Hesperia, CA he will be sponsoring Tyler Vik of Team Kyosho in the 1/8 Electric Class. Tyler will be running for the Jones Cancer Foundation Team. Keith also mentioned to me he has given sponsorships to Jake Hass, Chris Emard and partial sponsorship to Thomas Jones of Solano Beach as team driver/mechanic throughout JBRL Nitro Series for this year.

He also mentioned to me in another text later that night that the Points Winners of the JBRL Electric Series will be used as extras in an upcoming movie. At this point you think I am done with some nuggets of info. I am not. Keith also mentioned he has deposited money into an escrow account to buy 67 acres off the I15 near Escondido. He plans to build a couple of kick ass nitro courses. I held off in releasing this info at the time it was given to me because I have been so wrapped up in gathering content for my soon to be released new weblog http://www.rcinsider.com/.

I haven't determined the launch date but it is very soon and when I decide my loyal readers will be the first to know. This past April when I first mentioned Keith Jones I told you about his plans for building an indoor track in North County and the fact that he has secured not 1 but 2 Circuit City buildings. I later followed it up with the fact he has had 30 tons of sand free race grade clay delivered to the site. I sent him a text yesterday to find out about when he thinks he will open. He hopes to have an idea in about a week. As some of you may not know his health is not the best right now, he is battling cancer and has a kidney stone that is causing great pain these days. Keith mentioned he also is having some wisdom teeth pulled at the end of this week. He said he really needs to get his health back on track so he is having his Cousin step in and help with the operations of his tracks!

A few weeks ago I was at the UPGRADE RC Race at Fun Time Hobbies and Keith's Cancer Foundation was a sponsor. He stepped up and gave away 5 kits to 5 lucky people. Were talking 4x4 Jammin Short Course kits to 1/8 nitro kits. I was amazed at this generosity. He did this for Round 3 at JBRL Electric Series race at Hot Rod Hobbies as well. He plans to give away 8 kits in Bakersfield, CA at Round 4 of the JBRL Electric Series. At this time he says he is only doing this for the Electric Series. Finally last week I told you I had some driver news regarding the RC Insider. Please check back this Friday for my next blog. I can hardly wait to share this information.

RC Insider teams up with El Cajon Hobbies...

Good Morning Everyone,

Before I make my way out to Barona RC Speedway today, I want to take the time to let everyone know I apologise for not getting the Richard Smith Profile Blog done this week. I have been running and gunning all week working like a mad man gathering content for my new site rcinsider.com.

The best news this week for me was being able to contact Richard's sister Linda. She gave me a wonderful bio on Richard. I can't wait to share this with you. I realise the Richard Smith Memorial race is today, but his story is timeless... (To me his story will never get out dated, that is why I am a part of this wonderful hobby.)

On to Business News: At this time I am able to announce that the RC Insider and El Cajon Hobbies have agreed to cross promote each other's businesses. This past Friday I had a meeting with Vik the owner of El Cajon Hobbies and I presented some idea's to him. He was very receptive. At this time I am letting all of So Cal know El Cajon Hobbies is the Official Hobby Shop of the RC Insider. Very soon you will see the El Cajon Hobbies Team Trailer will the new RC Insider graphics on it...

I am looking forward to this working relationship. I have more to blog about Team ECH and their shop but I am saving it for the new site... I also have more info on some up coming driver news that will be released next week... (This is a great get for the RC Insider)!

Finally on May 19th El Cajon Hobbies was burglarized. Around 28,000 dollars worth of RC related products were taken out of the hobby shop. Last Friday I did my part in trying to help this business by getting the surveillance video on Chanel 6's 10pm news. Hopefully these guys get caught soon...

Richard Smith Memorial Race...

Good Evening,

I promised a special blog this week on Richard Smith an OC Circuit Driver. I wanted to share this info tonight and start preparing for this weekends race. I am PMing Charlie Barnes as soon as this blog is out. I hope this race will have a big turnout. I will blog about this a couple more times this week because our RC racing community has lost a veteran driver here in Southern California. To be honest, I probably raced with Richard Smith at some point when I was in high school. He has been around a while and I used to race so cal on-road back in the day when I drove with Kisbey Motors and Precision Motorworks Motors, back in the early 90's.

If you get a chance please check out the forums on rctech.net. I read them and they touched me so much that I am having my mom's Catholic Church St. Joesph's in Modesto, CA have a mass held in his name.

In my next blog I will profile Richard and post some of his friends comments... I hope the little bit I can do helps his family during this tough time...

Below is the info on the race... My blog this week is dedicated to Richard Smith...

Richard Smith Memorial Race - R/C Tech Forums: "To all who have been lucky and fortunate enough to have known Rich, he has gone to a better place now. WE will have a 1 day memorial race for him on Sunday, May 30 at Surf City Raceway. All the proceeds will go to his Wife to help with there time in need. She will also auction off his RC stuff as well. So to those who happened to have the 5th Sunday off this month, Come On and Join us! Surf City Raceway is located at 18100 Golden West St. Huntington Beach, Ca 92648.
Cost is $20 to race. This is no trophy race. No special prizes. Just a race to help a good friend's family. Thank you."

News and Notes 5/17/10

Good Morning Everyone,

I got back from the UP GRADE RC Race yesterday around 4:00pm yesterday and boy was I tired. I didn't stay to shoot video of the mains. I had to come home early for work last night. Anyway it was a fun weekend in Hesperia, CA. If you ever get a chance and like running on a loamy track, Fun Time Hobbies is the place for you. UP GRADE RC, SMITH OPTICS, JONES CANCER FOUNDATION and a few other sponsors that I can't remember put on a fantastic weekend.

I walked away with a couple of door prizes that I will gladly be using... It is nice to see RC manufacturers step up in these tough economic times and sponsor races such as this. UP GRADE RC had their trophies specially made for this race. I believe Jimmy Babcock kept announcing the fact that they were laser etched... They were without a doubt some of the coolest awards so far this year I have seen...

I want to take this time to touch on a couple of things in this blog... Last week while I was at work a few of my readers asked me about my blog... I received 5 phone calls and 3 e-mails. Much to my surprise I didn't realise my blog was taken off socal-rc.com. The reason for me blogging about this is the fact that I was told I wasn't the only affiliate taken off the website. Later that night I spoke with Dan he assures me our relationship is in good standing and that he is in the process of creating an affiliate page. He said in due time I'll be back on the site. I really haven't left the site because I post everything in General RC Discussions where I already have a thread.

After thinking about it over the weekend at the UPGRADE RACE. I have a take on this. I wish I would have been notified about this before it happened, but I wasn't. I really didn't like the fact that I was blind sided by this. The RC community is very small here in San Diego. There are a couple of good hobby shops, couple of legit tracks right now etc...! I can honestly say I didn't lose any sleep over this. This was a blip on my radar... I told several people socal-rc.com can do what they want it is their site. I'm not a paid advertiser... I do see where their site is going... I am very happy for them. They are getting the exposure they need and that is fine with me.

I write stuff in my blog that people like and I write about things that people don't like. I want everyone who reads this blog to understand I have always been thankful for everything socal-rc.com has done for this blog promoting it and mentioning it at their races. My initial goal when I started this blog was to promote the local racing scene in San Diego and the surrounding region of Southern California.

I plan to do a better job at bringing more local stories and race coverage in the future with either photo's or video. I am slowly growing month by month and I have several notable professionals in the RC Industry like what I have been doing for awhile now... It is nice to hear from time to time that people enjoy reading my blog. Recently Pat Lowry I noticed followed my blog. That is great for me. Pat is a very credible local hot shoe here in SD. In addition to Pat other So Cal locals such as Charlie B of the OC Circuit, Jaws local on-road race director of SDAR have been following my blog and commenting on it. I really appreciate their endorsments.

The blog has been quiet this past week because I am in the process of moving this blog to my own site. I spent the past week lining up graphics, working out certain partnerships with local San Diego RC companies. Finally, I secured the domain rcinsider.com! You are free to check it out. It is parked at www.godaddy.com. I will have my graphics done by the middle of this upcoming week by my partner in crime Dave Blair of the Blair Group! Just kidding Dave works with me at XETV-TV here in San Diego he is the lighting director and shades all the video that comes into the control room from the field and studio.

I should be back on track this week. I have a blog about the upcoming Richard Smith Memorial Race in the OC at the end of the month that I am planning to run. I have my thoughts on the JBRL Electric Series. My guy Zach Rogers continues to dominate the SS field! I wish I was that fast... Finally, I will release more info on what is taking place with my new website.

Stay tuned for my next blog...

UPGRADE RC SKIN IT TO WIN IT RACE!

Good Morning Everyone,

I just arrived at my hotel this morning here in Hesperia, CA. Instead of going to the J Concepts Wave Race this weekend I chose to attend the UPGRADE RC SKIN IT TO WIN IT RACE at Fun Time Hobbies in Hesperia, CA. I am now off to the track to get set-up. I will be bringing you a couple of blogs all weekend long, as well as taking some video. I will have a few new video's up next week when I return to San Diego.

Next week I'll have the blog up and running again... I used this week to get my truck ready for the race and babysit the little one. I have plenty to talk about JBRL, SOCAL-RC, you name it I'll be right there in the middle of it.... In fact I already have a blog meant to go last week. It is written I just need to do a little more editing and quite possibly I might get it out this weekend. If you haven't gotten a chance check out thercinsider youtube channel! Please subscribe and give me your feedback.....

I plan on adding at least two new video's each week... Ok I'm off to get some coffee and go race...

News and Notes 5/1/10

Good Evening Everyone,

Today was the final round of the Socal-rc.com Short Course Series hosted at Kearny Mesa Bowl. The race took place in the bowling alley's parking lot. I spoke with Socal-rc.com's moderator, and I will have all the results in the next few days. I told Dan Callander at the end of today's race that I will blog more in depth about their Points Series as soon as the results are in. He told me he can't wait to read the report! Grade me Accordingly Dan!!!!!!

Next topic I was at Barona Speedway last weekend with the gang. In the words of Downtown Dave Brown "Good Times were to be had by All". All you socal drivers.... You have no idea what your missing by not getting down here to this track! I love it.... Anyways I got the Barona Channel Up right now it is under RC Insider... I am basically posting the video's I cut and putting them on Barona's Thread. These races will be on Barona's website when Ed Garcia gets one going. He is working on that as we speak....

While at Barona last week I spoke with Kyle Christy of El Cajon Hobbies. Kyle is also their Race Team Manager. He mentioned that he and the owner of El Cajon Hobbies are putting a series race together later this Summer. Right now they are working on getting an I lap system. It is nice to see things really starting to take shape in this town... I am so glad to be out on the front lines writing about the local RC racing action in the County I live in.

Finally the REAL BIG NEWS one MR. KEITH JONES of ROCKETSHIPRACING.COM called me last week. We texted back and forth for 3 hours straight while I was at work. Big update from Mr. Jones 8 Tons of race grade sand free clay has arrived since last Saturday. He said things are moving right along nicely. Inspections are 40% done on one building and they have just started inspecting the second building this past week. Currently he is almost done securing a food court with a Mini Del Taco. He hopes to get a Cold Stone Creamery as well. In talking with Keith he mentioned he has enough room for two indoor 8th scale tracks and one on road track. That is awesome...

I really am looking forward to seeing this project come full circle. I hope to be talking with Keith in the next couple of days. I know he will be at the JBRL this weekend. In fact I'll probably text him tomorrow. I couldn't make it this weekend but I hope to be back on the road in June.... I have to pick and choose my out of town races carefully right now. Trust me, I wanted to be at Hot Rod Hobbies this weekend, but I was told by "The General" aka my wife that no out of town racing until Mother's Day is over.

At this time, I want to thank the guys at Socal-rc.com for putting on a fabulous Short Course Series here in San Diego. It takes a lot of work putting something like this together. You guys did a great job your first time out of the gate. I also want to thank them for having my blog on their site. I appreciate the good working relationship I have with socal-rc.com.

I would like to thank the Barona 1/8th Wonder Crew for letting me be your video guy and letting me put a channel together for you guys. Ed Garcia you and my Pit Dawg Jim Cooper are the reason I keep racing and blogging! Finally a big thanks to Keith Jones of rocketshipracing.com, I haven't known you very long but in dealing with you these past couple of weeks it has been a pleasure talking to you about your new track. I look forward to following your story as it continues to develop here in San Diego.

The RC Insider is now on youtube.com

As some of you may know I am a news photographer by trade. I work at a local TV station in San Diego, CA. I chase everything from Crime to City Council meetings etc. Well, recently it was brought to my attention from some of my colleagues that I should put some video with my blog.

The news business that I work in these days is now going towards the Face book, YouTube, Blogger, Twitter generation. Ton's of different social media platforms to put your work on. Well, RC is my hobby and when I got into this hobby I didn't want to shoot video on the weekend because I shoot video all week. The races on the weekend are my sanctuary for blowing off some steam and getting away from work and pretty much most of the stuff that annoyed me the week prior. Well a few have convinced me to get the camera out and put some video's together when I am at the races.

I am currently going to be helping with the 1/8 Wonder Barona Speedway RC track here in San Diego build a channel for their track. I also plan on shooting some video's when I'm at the JBRL this year and any two day race for that matter... The RC Insider Channel that I will be putting together will mostly be an information channel along with a lot of good fast local RC racing action in So Cal. I hope to shoot some interviews with factory drivers at the larger races I attend...

The true goal of this channel is to grow the hobby at the local club racing level. So far there are several channels already posting video. That is fantastic. There are always room for more channels. I plan on making mine a bit different. So please when you get a chance subscribe and check back often, I have a few more video's to come out this week...

Coming up in my next Blog I have a Rocketshipracing.com update on the new indoor facility breaking ground in San Diego. I also have an update on a possible off-road series put on by El Cajon Hobbies in El Cajon, CA. A lot is going on here in So Cal right now and I am working on getting you the latest info on everything that I get sent to me...

Stay tuned for my next Blog....

P.S. I really plan on getting out to one of Charlie Barnes races this Summer. I want to see what his OC Circuit is all about... I missed getting to meet him at a painting seminar at Krazy Kevins Hobbies here in Chula Vista, CA last month... I definitely need to touch base with him soon....

Modesto RC Raceway's Inaugural Race 4/24/10!

As many of you know I spend a lot of time blogging about the RC community that I race in on a weekly basis. I thought I would change gears a bit this weekend and inform my Northern California drivers who read this blog of a new track's inaugural race taking place this weekend.

In Just a few short hours Modesto RC Raceway will be hosting it Grand Opening Race. Since last winter I have been letting you know about this track and that I have planned to do a write up on it. Well I thought to myself it would be better to wait and speak about this track closer to the date it opened.

I personally have a vested interest in this track because it is being opened up in my hometown of Modesto, CA. Actually it is probably like 1.5 miles from the home I grew up in! Can you believe that... I have to drive a minimum of 1.5 hours to race electric off road regularly, but now there is a track a mile and a half from my childhood home... Huh go figure.

Since last December I have been corresponding with Justin Avrett part owner and creator of Modesto RC Raceway. I spent a few hours talking to him on the phone about how the track came about and when he planned on opening it. Well, it was planned to be opened last year, but they had to take care of getting all the necessary paperwork finished and it just wasn't able to get done. When I last spoke with Justin he had a severe leg injury due to working at the track which also led to the track not being opened on time.

Personally, I am glad they waited till this spring to have the Grand Opening Race. I lived in Modesto for nearly 24 years of my life and racing outdoors in 45 degree December weather isn't a day in the park. Now I am only saying this because I live in San Diego, which I have grown to be a weather snob as of late! LOL!

Justin mentioned to me that the track came about because he was playing with his RC car in the street one day and so was his was his neighbor down the street. The two started talking and formed a friendship which grew to a partnership, and one thing led to another and Modesto RC Raceway was born... I skipped a step in there... Justin's friend and business partner goes by the nickname "Pickle". Well Pickle and Justin got to talking and thought how great it would be to have an RC track to run their cars on.

Pickle mentioned to Justin, "Hey I have some one that might be interested in our idea." Pickle's friend owns a Funworks game center. Pickle brought the idea to his friend. Details were fianlized and the RC track is located inside Funworks as we speak. Growing up in Modesto, I always had to drive to Sacramento or Livermore to race electric off road. There were no tracks in the nearby area. I take that back there was D&D raceway in Turlock, CA which was a 15 foot carpet track... Every time I drove it I got dizzy!

I am very glad to see this track getting underway. I plan to be up there this summer and visiting with the track crew and bringing you some pictures and video of my time at the track. I went home this past Christmas with my family to visit my parents and I stopped by the track. I forgot my camera but the track was completed and the layout looked great! I can't wait to try out this track! If you get an opportunity or are passing through Motown stop on by and run a few laps...

Stay tuned for the next blog....

Rocketshipracing.com closes on 2 buildings in SD!

Breaking News....

Keith Jones of Rocketshipracing.com and Jones Cancer Foundation called me yesterday and left a message. That message was to let me know that he is closing on two buildings here in San Diego next week. He also asked me, if I wanted to tour the properties with him, and proceeded to offer me a lifetime membership to his new indoor race facility that he will be building. I plan to take a tour with him next week and bring you pictures and possibly some video of the two locations...

Last month, I wrote an article about indoor off road racing coming to San Diego. Keith Jones was at the center of that story. Right now in my opinion Keith Jones is the hottest RC story to hit this county... Yesterday, we traded texts all afternoon and didn't get a chance to talk. This weekend I plan on touching base with him and finding out which of the two buildings will hold the indoor off road RC track....

In other news today my blog got a good endorsement from Matt Chamber's of Upgrade RC and Team Losi Racing today. He mentioned on rctech.net that he likes my blog! This is what I like to hear, becasue it makes me keep looking for interesting stories to bring all of you as often as I can!

Stay tuned for my next blog...

News and Notes 4/20/10

Good Morning,

I first wanted to give a huge shout out to Downtown Dave, Ed Garcia and Ray Butcher. At first I was a huge skeptic of racing my SC10 at 1/8 Wonder of Barona Speedway. I thought maybe the track would be too rough and too big for 1/10 scale trucks. Well I was very wrong! I was finally able to make it out to my new home track two weeks ago and that place is hooked up.... I really enjoyed myself... I will be doing most of my practicing and testing at this facility. Currently they are getting a consistent 50 to 75 drivers every Sunday when weather is permitting. Not to mention 10 to 15 heats of racing for only being open less than 6 months with official racing....

Currently, I will be starting a YouTube channel for Ed Garcia and 1/8 Wonder of Barona Speedway. He and I have been talking about this for that past couple of weeks. If you live in the San Diego area this place will be the hot spot this summer for sure, if your looking for some local RC racing. Ed mentioned to me that he is noticing a lot of the old fast guys that used to drive at Family Hobbies in Santee are starting to make their way out to Barona now.

He says, "that is a great sign that you know your doing it right when the top locals from the past are getting back into racing...." I will be out there this weekend on Sunday for sure. I will shoot a featured race for the YouTube channel. Hopefully I will have this channel launched by the end of the week. I have been pretty busy at work lately not to mention this Thursday is my 5th wedding anniversary! I won't mess with (Thursday!)....

While I was at Barona it was brought to my attention that a couple of the main guys from the socal-rc.com group have parted ways and are quite possibly going to be doing some promoting and working with El Cajon Hobbies. I wish these men the best and hope whatever they do works out. They have been great to me over the past few months and getting to know them has been a pleasure. I wish them the best of luck wherever this hobby takes them.

This past Saturday OCRC hosted the second round of the JBRL Eletric Series. It was a smashing success. There were 260 entries for a one day event according to the OCRC website. Jimmy Babcock delivered a very competitive field of drivers. I really enjoyed the 4 minute qualifying heats. Jimmy really knows how to run a race program. He is the best in the biz.

Jimmy I thank you for saying you deem as a "Hot Rod local in my main" even though I am based in SD! I'll go on record and say Hot Rod Hobbies is my favorite track to race at on the JBRL circuit... Hopefully I'll be there in two weeks.

I would like to mention a big thanks to Zach Rogers, Cody Turner and Matt Gilbert for helping me with programming my LRP ESC this past weekend. It was nice to meet Matt for the first time. If those of you don't know who # 7 Matt Gilbert is, he is the one to watch in the Intermediate Short Course Class this season.... He drives a red SC10 with Losi shocks. His truck is dialed out there... Not to mention I wish I had his tire setup this past weekend. I think he was the only one in the class with AKA Wishbones! I don't know how he does it but it is amazing to watch him drive that rig.

I religiously read some of the different RC rags and I have noticed that the pros really have been living up to there name and reputation at the track... I talked with Chad Bradley, extensively about about his 4 wheel drive truck and different radio settings. He is such a delight to talk with... I would say he is one of the most approachable guys to speak with should you have any questions about the products he represents. Pretty much every one of the top level drivers that I spoke with; Frank Root, Chris Jarosz just to name a few were very helpful.

Finally, Josh Mitchell stopped me at the tire cleaning station to ask me about the Brat's and when will I be bringing them out this year... I told him they will be at Bizbee's No Tell Motel come the 5th Round of the JBRL at Pegasus Hobbies. Quite possibly they might return at Hot Rod Hobbies depending on the fact if I get that day off or not! But Josh don't worry I am itching for some summer grilling and I know Brent and company will be happy to fire up the grill!

Finally, I want to end this blog on a great note! This coming Saturday my hometown of Modesto will be hosting its grand opening race. Modesto RC Raceway is finally going to be online and open. I am so happy to see some racing coming to my hometown. Now when I go home for a visit I have a place to getaway when I need a break from the family! I will be doing a special blog for Justin Avrett who is part owners of Modesto RC Raceway in the next day or two.

Stay tuned for my next blog....

Indoor Off-road Racing in San Diego?

Breaking News

Dateline San Diego! I got off the phone yesterday evening with the newest sponsor of the JBRL Electric Series Keith Jones. He is doing a "Double Gold Sponsor for Jimmy Babcock's Electric and Nitro Series." If you didn't notice the two new banners at the track they are Jones Cancer Foundation and Rocketshipracing.com. It is nice to see this man sponsor both series races especially in this economy. I had to hunt this guy down it wasn't easy but the RC Insider takes no prisoner's when it comes to getting the latest in RC News involving my adopted hometown!

It has been speculated or rumored since last summer that someone has purchased or in the process of purchasing a building and looking to put in an Indoor Off-road Track somewhere in San Diego County. I have been sitting on this story for a while because until someone mentions actual plans to me then I am better off staying quiet. Well last night I tracked Keith Jones down and spent some time getting a feel for what he is trying to do. He is in fact working on placing an indoor off-road racing facility here in San Diego County.

He has a Realtor and he is looking at several different options. He has mentioned to me that he is trying to acquire the land that goes with the building so he can be the sole owner and never have to worry about losing the building. Keith is looking at making this happen either in San Marcos and quiet possibly Encinitas, California. His vision is that he hopes to acquire some of the old Circuit City buildings in this county. He wants to make a track like West Coast RC Raceway. Indoor off-road, asphalt on-road, and outside possibly adding a dirt oval track. That is why he wants to acquire the land with the buildings. He also mentioned to me that he is at 50% finished on one of his contracts so we might be closer that we think to some indoor fun!

To help offset the costs Keith is looking to partner with local RC manufacturers. Hopefully there will be some interest with some of the local businesses. Keith mentioned yesterday he hopes that by this September 2010 he is dropping the clay dirt inside the future site location here in San Diego.

Some background on Keith Jones is he is living with Cancer. Jones recently started his own Cancer Foundation which is one of the Gold Sponsors of the JBRL Racing Series. One of the buildings he is in the process of getting will go to funding Cancer research as well. People might ask how he is able to do this... He has worked on over 71 motion picture films and invested his money wisely. I mentioned to him yesterday since he is new to the San Diego area, he needs to get in touch with a few local outfits and maybe get together and brainstorm some ideas. I recommended that he gets in touch with socal-rc.com and get his websites on their forum. I plan on putting him in touch with Dan Callander.... At this time this is all the info I have Keith and I will be speaking more at the next JBRL race in April at OCRC Raceway and I'll be staying on top of this developing story that is in the works here in San Diego...

I'll post a link to Keith's Business. It is known as http://www.rocketshipracing.com/. His number is not published yet so I promised at this time I would only put him in touch with the necessary people that my offer some help with getting the track up and running. San Diego here is a prime opportunity for you guys. I would hope everyone would support a facility like this coming to San Diego. It would be great for all of us....

Also I got a PM on RC Tech from Palm Desert RC Raceway yesterday. Guys I am so glad you finally opened up I know it has been a long process and I am very glad to hear 8 mile racer's RC dream is coming true man! If your in the Palm Desert area get out there and race it. The track races on the weekends so check the website for hours and times and head out for some fun in the desert. Palm Desert RC Raceway will also be hosting a RC Pro Series Race June 5th. I'll post a link to the track. Apparently legendary track builder Joey Christensen wants to build and hold a Short Course race there. I'm in! If you build it Joey I'll come. I missed the Silver State this year! I love this hobby and anything I can blog to help you guys out just let me know.....

Speaking of the Silver State race congrats to San Diego's Zac Burnside and Tekno RC for their nice solid Runs at the Nitro Challenge Zac finished 5th in 4wd and Tekno RC with a 7th place finish.

Ok I am out of breath and I am going to do my best to get another blog out later in the week.

Stay tuned....

News and Notes 3/12/10

Sophia Rose Flint

1/29/10

8 pounds 5 ounces

20 inches

Scripps La Jolla

10:37am

Good evening everyone,

I wanted to take this time to let my followers and readers know that my blog isn't dead. I just have had it on hold due to the birth of my daughter at the end of January. I can honestly say these have been the coolest two months of my life. Just watching little Sophia grow has been a blessing. Now that I have shared this info with all of you I can switch gears and get back to race mode.

First off... WHAT HAS BEEN UP WITH THIS FREAKING WEATHER LATELY? Seriously I had some free time earlier in the week and my brother happened to be in town. Needless to say our golf game was rained out! Are you kidding me? This is San Diego!!! Not Seattle!!! LOL! Hopefully the worst is behind us. Last weekend was my first weekend back racing. No better place for me to start racing again was two miles from my house at an undisclosed location in Chula Vista known as Frank's backyard track. It was a SOCAL-RC.com's fundrasier race.

SOCAL-RC.com is hosting a booth at this years RCX. I have never been to RCX, but in the future I really hope I can get out to this Hobby Expo and check out the latest and greatest in RC. If you want more information on RCX you can find it on-line or you can contact San Diego's local connection to this Hobby Expo SOCAL-RC.com. They have ticket's available, so if you go please stop by and check out their booth.

I am personally glad to see these guys take the time out of their busy schedules to make some time for this cool hobby know as RC. I support and these guys in their quest to really try to give San Diego exposure at this Hobby Expo. Last week, they held a race as fundraiser to raise money for their booth at Pomona. I donated the winnings from last weeks race. I know times are tough and money is tight, but I urge all locals that race with these guys to donate what you can so they can have a safe trip and spread the word about RC in San Diego. So please stop by and see these guys at the Hobby Expo next weekend.

On to my next topic. I wasn't able to make it out to the Grand Opening at the end of January at Barona's new RC facility in San Diego. From what I heard they had like over 120 entries. That is awesome. I have been so busy lately, but I am hoping to get out there this weekend. At the end of this blog I'll put a link to this track. RC racing is really making a come back in San Diego I see more two day races coming to Barona in the near future and possibly JBRL Nitro races in years to come.

Ok my next item of business is track preview's. I have been blogging about Palm Desert RC Raceway, and Modesto RC Raceway I plan to have those track preview's shortly in the next week or two. I think you will find what I have to say is very interesting about these tracks.

Finally, I wanted to mention congratulations is in order to a one Zach Rogers. Zach races for Banzai Motors, Team Associated, JConcepts and a few other sponsors. I just wanted to say congrats to this young man he has been en fuego as of late... That means (on fire)! Zach has taken the podium at the Golden State Challenge earlier this year in Mod Truck and Mod Buggy. He also was on the podium at the Supercross Series at West Coast Raceway by winning superstock buggy and mod 4wd buggy. Finally, he was on the podium at the ROAR Regional at Roadrunner's RC in Ventura, CA last month. I don't have his results but I read he did well at this event.

I have taken the time to write about Zach because he is an up and coming RC driver in this sport and is the future of racing should he stick with it. He is without a doubt going to be a contender in this years JBRL and most 2 to 3 day events in and around California. Plus he is a huge fan of this blog and likes what I have to say which is nice to hear.

Ok drivers, that is all for now but in my next issue I will be discussing the JBRL Electric Series in more detail as to the new rules and regulations.

Socal-rc.com's SC Points Series Race #1

Limited Winners 1st Kevin H. 2nd Jeff and 3rd Eric (Sorry no last names)
Unlimited Winners 1st Jake 2nd Jeremy Flint 3rd Bobby (Sorry no last names)

Towards the end of last year Socal-rc.com announced that they would be hosting an off-road Short Course Points Series for 1/10 scale electric 2wd and 4wd RC trucks. While the group spent the last couple of months working diligently putting this series together, they were able to pick up several sponsors such as Team Associated, Traxxas, HPI Racing, Pro-line, JC Concepts, and Impakt RC just to name a few.

For those of you who have read my blog or are new and reading it for the first time Socal-rc.com is a local racing community based in San Diego, CA. It's organized by a group of dedicated RC enthusiast's. If you have any questions about RC these guys are here to help you. If you go to their website at any given time you can find help for just about anything related to RC. They cover a wide range of topics from batteries, diffs, wheels, etc. I strongly urge anyone thinking of buying a RC vehicle or just need help fixing your ride get in touch with these guys and ask questions. It will make your RC experience a lot more enjoyable.

On Janurary 9th 2010 Socal-rc.com kicked off their Short Course Points Series at Frank's Backyard track in Chula Vista CA. The classes offered were 2wd limited and unlimited. On Janurary 30th they will be starting the 4wd class Points Series. That class will only have 5 races in the series as opposed to 6 races with the 2wd trucks. There will be one throwout race for all drivers. For more information on the SC Points Series please go to socal-rc.com's they will be able to answer any and all questions you might have. I believe there are a few spots still available if there are any drivers looking to get into this series. Alright that being said let's get to the break down of my race day notes:

On the morning of Janurary 9th I had a family emergency and I was late to the race and missed watching the first round of qualifying action, so I could get my truck ready for it's first qualifying run. I had all sorts of problems in the first round from speed control issues to keeping the transponder plugged in properly. Long story short I wasn't prepared. In the second round of qualifying I was able to catch alot more of the action. I was most impressed with Mike Jr. in the limited class. That kid can surely drive a Traxxas.... He was the top qualifier of the limited class, and looked to be the standout driver for the day in his class. Watching his Traxxas cruise the track made me want to go out and order their new 4wd truck.

During the limited main I only saw a few minutes of the action because I still needed to fix a couple of things on my truck. What I saw was very impressive. Kevin H. known as (Central Coaster) went on to take the win and Jeff known as (JMINSD) finished in second with only 5 seconds apart. Finally Eric known as (edubRC) finished in 3rd. What I thought was really cool about this race Team Associated, HPI and Traxxas all had their trucks take the podium!

In breaking down the unlimited class the usual local Top Guns of socal-rc.com showed up to throw down some paint. Jake (JakeG1999), Frank H. (FrankH), and Josh (DurkaDurka)were the top gun slingers for the day. They were the fastest qualifiers of the day. Jake was the top qualifer of the day in the unlimited class. I was literally chasing these guys all day. Both Jake and Frank H. were running HPI Blitz's. While watching their qualifiying runs Jake was really smooth and didn't make any mistakes. Frank, I thought had the speed and the punch in the turns.

During the main a lot of us got tangled up in the first couple of laps but then Jake and Frank H. were off to the races. Around lap 11 Frank broke down and I moved into 2nd place. I was at the time pretty close to 3/4 of a lap down from those two at the time, otherwise I never would have caught Frank H. With Frank H. breaking down at that time, in my opinion 2nd and 3rd place were up for grabs. The battle ended up being for 3rd place between Bobby and Josh. When it was all said and done Jake know as (JakeG1999) took the win, Jeremy Flint known as (Jdogger1) finished 2nd and Bobby known as (Metalhead613) finished in 3rd place.

It was a really fun and exciting race to be a part of. I look forward to covering the rest of the Socal-rc.com Point Series Races. If your looking for some fun laid back racing where bragging rights is really the only thing on the line then come out to San Diego and have some fun running your short course truck. The next SC Points Series race will be a week from today in Kyle's backyard track. It is going to be an exciting year for RC racing here in San Diego!
